Feminist, diverse, and cross-genre – all characteristics that underpin the ‘Heroines of Sound’ festival, which once again presents early and current heroines of electronic sound, spanning subgenres from performance and sound art to advanced pop. The current programme sheds new light on the legendary ‘disembodied’ sound of electronic music, particularly with this year’s double focus on voice and percussion conjoined with electronics. Outstanding percussionists such as Katharina Ernst, Tatiana Heuman, Florencia Curci, Teresa Riemann, Robyn Schulkowsky, and Laura Robles offer beat-oriented drum and electronic sets. The young Polish ensemble Kompopolex perform the Berlin premiere of new works by Kelley Sheehan, Stellan Veloce, Sofie Meyer, Greta Eacott, Marta Śniady and Monika Dalach.
Soloist ensemble PHØNIX16 present the world premiere of Marisol Jiménez’ ‘Maŝinika Deliro’ – a crossover between performance art and electro-acoustic sound synthesis that transforms the human body into a sound generator through the interplay of electronics and voice.
One festival spotlight is focussed on Katalin Ladik: as one of the few female protagonists of the artistic avant-garde, she established herself as a pioneer of acoustic poetry with her radical approach in the former Yugoslavia of the 1960s/70s. Using body and voice as instrument and medium, she calls into question conventional gender roles, as in her new work ‘Membrane Universe’.
Together with interdisciplinary performances by younger artists/authors such as Ira Hadžić and Swantje Lichtenstein, the intergenerational evening programme offers diverse encounters between language, literature, and (sound) art. Other highlights include the Berlin premiere of recent compositions by Karen Power, Kathy Hinde, and Anna Murray, performed by Irish Quiet Music Ensemble. Composer and this year’s guest curator Julia Mihály presents her new version of ‘18WEST – Songs für den Untergang’, whose stylistic references to agitprop and protest music make for a captivating piece. The programme also includes performances by experimental multi-instrumentalist Theresa Stroetges, aka Golden Diskó Ship, an electronic beat-oriented Duo set by Jasmine Guffond und Katharina Ernst and Ukrainian electronic musician Zavoloka.
