Since 2006, this one-time pumping station on the Spree has been host to wide-ranging performances, transforming the entire building and its grounds into a stage. Evening concerts in unusual settings astonish audiences, the studios provide an open invitation to experience installations, and the open deck offers listening sessions in the early evening sun with a view of the water.
As a space dedicated to the arts and collaboration, Radialsystem brings different cultural traditions and forms of knowledge into dialogue with one another. Using interdisciplinary formats we develop, investigate and present new forms of artistic expression drawn from dance, concert and music installation.
We translate body, time and space into movement, sound and connection, thereby giving rise to encounters between tradition and innovation, experience and ideas, art and life. Radialsystem leads us to unknown realities and sensory manifestations, allowing us to unearth new possibilities.
A space for arts and ideas
Radialsystem is an institutional anchor of Berlin's independent arts scene: as a venue for contemporary performance art, this establishment develops, investigates and presents new forms of artistic expression, particularly in the areas of choreography, music theater and concerts, thereby unleashing international momentum. We want to know what 21st-century music sounds like and adopt a global perspective to question categorisations such as “classical” or “contemporary”. Through the encounter between music and other arts, we search for forms of expression beyond the classical concert or opera. As part of the vibrant Berlin dance scene, we create space and visibility for local and international artists alike.
Radialsystem aims to sound out boundaries – to make them permeable and, at times, to redefine them. We bring into conversation people with different experiences, bodies and ways of thinking, and together we search for new narratives about our world. It is our desire to make culture visible and experiential, as a landscape of many equally valid perspectives. Contradictions are allowed and ought to coexist, affect one another and create friction.
We work with partners at the intersection of art, science and society, and want to learn from marginalised voices in particular, to empower one another and to reach a collective diversity.
A space for Diversity and Cooperation
The strengths and weaknesses of Radialsystem staff harmonise with one another; these are people who encounter the unknown with openness and share a spirit of inquiry and discovery.
We enjoy being good hosts, and work together actively and passionately on the question of how we can shape community. Calling ourselves into question makes up a creative and ethical approach for us, and our organisation is a space in constant evolution.
Radialsystem is a meeting place for exchange and debate: we want to burst bubbles, turn high culture on its head and contribute to social change through artistic dialogue. We invite our audience to help shape this vision of a culture for and with everyone.
