“Økse” is Danish and translates into English as “axe”. In its Danish pronunciation, however, it also calls to mind the word “Ashé” from the African Yoruba religion, where it describes the universal energy of life. And just as this energy flows through all that lives, so does the music of Danish saxophonist Mette Rasmussen’s new quartet, which opens the second evening of A L’ARME! – bringing an intuitive, authentic, and spiritual sound.

What follows is an audiovisual world premiere: the electro-acoustic formation Ephemeral Fragments by Berlin-based synthesizer virtuoso Korhan Erel and Essen-based master improvisers Emily Wittbrodt on cello and Florian Walter on tubax meet the Berlin A/V team “1:∞” around Lena Czerniawska and Emilio Gordoa for the first time.

Since the very beginning of the festival, A L’ARME has maintained close relationships with the Scandinavian creative music movement. In addition to “Økse” and Paal Nilssen-Love, guitarist and bassist Nicolas Leirtrø from Trondheim is another Scandinavian favourite included in the festival finale. „Powerjazz to the people!“ is the motto of I Like To Sleep, currently one of Norway’s most exciting newcomers.

After sharing the stage with Paal Nilssen-Love and Keiji Haino on the opening evening, Sofía Salvo presents her newest quartet project Yexxen on Friday – a supergroup between composition and deconstruction that brings together the London and Neukölln noise-punk underground at Radialsystem.

Multi-instrumentalists Morten Joh Olsen and Anders Hana have enjoyed cult status in Europe and beyond as the industrial noise duo Moha! since the 2000s. They recently celebrated their comeback on the international stage under the new name Naaljos Ljom. Their Nordic folk concept combines drum machines, microtonally tuned guitars and modular synthesizers with traditional Scandinavian instruments such as the Langeleik and Jew's harp - and concludes the second day of the festival with a danceable finale.

Biographien
