An encounter in the rooms of the Berlinische Galerie: “A Sky Like A Wall“ is the first major collaboration between the musicians of the Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop, the dancers of the Dance On Ensemble and the author and performance artist Rabih Mroué.
Both ensembles develop a collective authorship and team up with Mroué who wrote a notebook entitled ‘The Notebook of an Unspecified Colour’ for the production. Various scores are collected in it: Drawings, collages, illustrations, settings, instructions, which form the starting point of the creative process. The leitmotif of the notebook is the story of the Tower of Babel, which fails due to a lack of understanding. The idea of polyphony and multilingualism is inherent in the way both ensembles work. They ask themselves: How can we use different languages and still communicate? How can a project like this speak about the lack of dialogue in our day?
In the rooms of Berlinische Galerie the sixteen performers create miniatures in duos, trios and quartets. They are precisely arranged with each other; in one place in the room, a movement becomes visible, while in another place the sound that matches this movement is heard. Gradually, a sculpture of sound, dance and voices emerges, inviting the audience to constantly refocus their gaze and ear on what is happening and sounding. Many scenes take place simultaneously side by side. The audience travels with the artists through the space and decide for themselves which frame they choose, what they focus on.

Das Dance On Ensemble ist eine professionelle Company für Tänzer*innen über 40. Es wurde von der gemeinnützigen Kulturorganisation Bureau Ritter 2015 als Teil der Dance On Initiative gegründet, die die künstlerische Beziehung zwischen Tanz und Alter sowohl auf der Bühne und als auch in der Gesellschaft thematisiert. Seither arbeitet das Ensemble mit international renommierten Choreograf*innen und Regisseur*innen, zusammen, darunter Rabih Mroué, Lucinda Childs, Christos Papadopoulos, Meg Stuart und Jan Martens. Ziel ist es, ein Repertoire innovativer und anspruchsvoller zeitgenössischer Tanzwerke für Profitänzer*innen ab 40 Jahren zu entwickeln und eine nachhaltige Arbeitsperspektive für sie zu schaffen. Die Produktionen touren international und werden vom Publikum gefeiert. Derzeit versammelt das Dance On Ensemble 14 Tänzer*innen aus 10 Nationen, der künstlerische Leiter ist Ty Boomershine.
Das 2006 gegründete Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop hat sich der Entwicklung neuer Formen des experimentellen Musiktheaters verschrieben. Es erforscht Arbeitsweisen, die im Musikalischen, Körperlichen, Theatralen und Visuellen verankert sind. Das Ensemble verbindet sich mit Künstler*innen unterschiedlicher Genres und kultureller Prägungen und erprobt die Körper- und Raumwerdung von Musik in neuen, lebendigen Zusammenhängen. Die Mitglieder des Ensembles haben sich dabei von reinen Instrumentalist*innen zu musikalischen Performer*innen und Co-Autor*innen der kollaborativen Produktionen entwickelt. Es entstanden in den letzten Jahren Zusammenarbeiten u.a. mit Künstler*innen wie Laurent Chétouane, Isabel Lewis, Susanne Kennedy, Ariel Efraim Ashbel, Black Cracker, Pol Pi oder Maya Dunietz. In Berlin arbeitet Kaleidoskop seit vielen Jahren eng mit dem Radialsystem zusammen und ist mit seinen innovativen Projekten zudem regelmäßig Gast bei internationalen Festivals.
Rabih Mroué ist ein in Berlin lebender Künstler, Autor und Regisseur, dessen Werk Bildende Kunst, Performance, Theater und Musik verbindet. Im Wechselspiel zwischen Realität und Fiktion nutzt Mroué Dokumente, Videomaterial, Fotografien und Objekte, um die Autorität von archivierten Zeugnissen zu hinterfragen. Er ist Mitbegründer und Vorstandsmitglied der Beirut Art Center Association (BAC) und Mitherausgeber der TDR: The Drama Review (NYC). Bühnenarbeiten und Ausstellungen Mroués waren u.a. bei der documenta 13, an den Münchner Kammerspielen, beim Festival d‘Avignon und im MoMA (New York) zu sehen und werden regelmäßig international auf Festivals gezeigt.
