In the new two-part choreography “Beethoven 7”, Sasha Waltz together with an ensemble of 14 dancers devotes herself to “Symphony No. 7 in A Major (Op. 92)” in its entirety. This music originated in 1812, when Beethoven was already going deaf, and touches on topics of his time that are still relevant to us today: the failure of a revolution, a (forced) return to old traditions, a friction between the desire for societal transformation and restoration, and the accompanying loss of freedom and future perspectives. In the first part of the evening, Sasha Waltz takes up these topics to the electronic sounds of Diego Noguera’s “Freiheit/Extasis” (“Freedom/Extasis”), which were developed during the creation process, and reinterprets them from a contemporary point of view. How do personal freedom and societal constraints relate to each other?

Biographien

Sasha Waltz is a choreographer, dancer and director. She studied dance and choreography in Amsterdam and New York. Together with Jochen Sandig she founded the company Sasha Waltz & Guests in 1993 and is cofounder of the Sophiensæle (1996) and the Radialsystem (2006). From 2000-2004 she was a member of the artistic direction of the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz and in the season 2019/20 she was director of the Berlin State Ballet together with Johannes Öhman. In her current choreographic work Waltz focuses on the condensation of collaborative processes, such as the synchronous development of choreography and music (e.g. „Kreatur“, 2017). In 2021 Sasha Waltz was awarded the French cultural order „Commandeur de l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres“.

30 Years Sasha Waltz & Guests

In 2023, Sasha Waltz & Guests celebrates its 30th anniversary. On this occasion, the company presents a programme of Sasha Waltz’s most recent works, including two pieces at Radialsystem: „Beethoven 7“, which premiered at Radialsystem in March 2023, returns to the place of its creation at the end of August with four performance dates. In mid-September, the anniversary is celebrated with a double performance of „In C“, a colourful exploration of the world of minimal music. The project was created during the pandemic and premiered in spring 2021 in a livestream from Radialsystem. The children’s dance company of Sasha Waltz & Guests will also present their version of Sasha Waltz’s choreography titled „In C – nächste Generation“, which they developed together with dancers from Sasha Waltz & Guests. Furthermore, the company will be back at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele for the first time since 2019 – with Sasha Waltz’s work for dance, light and orchestra „SYM-PHONIE MMXX“, for which the choreographer commissioned Georg Friedrich Haas with a composition and which premiered at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin in March 2022.
