The immersive concert “generating realities” by drummer Philo Tsoungui and The String Archestra – the only ensemble in Germany that specializes in works by BIPoC composers – combines computer-generated music, string instruments and live electronics in a multimedia walk-through sound space.
Loss of friction, glitch, clash: Drummer and producer Philo Tsoungui plays with the translation between digital and analogue media, in both directions. Her computer algorithms generate music for The String Archestra from recorded sound samples of string instruments. In the performance, Tsoungui manipulates the live music with electronic tools. Fragile sounds of string instruments collide with futuristic noise collages – mechanical computer music encounters human spontaneity.
During the performance at Radialsystem, which Tsoungui developed during her fellowship at Beethovenfest and will premiere in this context in September, listeners can move freely around the musicians. The room is bathed in projections of shapes and colours that respond to the movements of everyone in the room.

Die junge Schlagzeugerin Philo Tsoungui ist zurzeit eine der gefragtesten Drummer*innen des Landes. In den vergangenen Jahren arbeitete sie u.a. mit Künstler*innen wie Mine, Fatoni, Tarek (K.I.Z), Moses Sumney, Loredana, Kraftklub oder Michael Patrick Kelly. Zuletzt war sie mit der amerikanischen Progrock-Band The Mars Volta auf Amerika- und Europa-Tournee. Philo Tsoungui lernte zunächst klassisches Schlagwerk bei Peter Sadlo, Raymond Curfs und Adel Shalaby und vertiefte ihre Kenntnisse in der Zusammenarbeit mit Kirill Petrenko, Martin Grubinger und Steve Reich. Sie erweiterte ihren musikalischen Kosmos durch das Eintauchen in Jazz, Pop, Rock und Elektronik und führt diese Welten nun auf eigene Art zusammen.
The String Archestra ist das einzige Ensemble bundesweit, das auf Werke von BIPoC Komponist*innen spezialisiert ist und dadurch national und international Sichtbarkeit erlangt hat. Das Ensemble wurde 2016 von der* Wissenschaftler*in und Dramaturg*in Dr. Dr. Daniele G. Daude gegründet, um Werke von Schwarzen, Indigenen und PoC Komponist*innen zu fördern, die sowohl im Konzertrepertoire als auch in der kanonischen klassischen Musikgeschichte unsichtbar gemacht worden sind. 2021 wurde The String Archestra mit dem TONALi Award Kategorie „Umbruch“ in der Elbphilharmonie ausgezeichnet. Das Ensemble ist in der Musik- und Performance-Szene zu Hause und kollaborierte mit renommierten Künstler*innen wie Ghostpoet (2022), Ayanna Witter-Johnson (2023), Naomi Kelechi Odhiambo (2023) Anthony R. Green (2021), Craig Harris (2024), Shannon Sea (2019) und Yudania Gomez Heredia (2024).
Programme
The concert will be followed by an artist talk with Philo Tsoungui and Raphael Moussa Hillebrand (Artistic Director of 2050 - Unsere Utopien), moderated by Daniele Daude, founder of The String Archestra.
Location
There wont't be any seating in the concert room. The audience can move freely. Chairs will be provided for people with restricted mobility.
The world premiere will take place on September 20 as part of the Beethovenfest Bonn.
