An invitation to an experimental concert: What do people actually experience during a concert? Why does music stir, inspire, and move us?
The internationally renowned chamber music ensemble Epitaph – violinists Baiba Skride and Gergana Gergova, violists Micha Afkham and Amihai Grosz as well as cellist Alban Gerhardt – and the distinguished up-and-coming Yubal Ensemble will perform string quintets by Ludwig van Beethoven, Brett Dean, and Johannes Brahms on a total of nine evenings at Radialsystem this spring. The musical program remains unchanged each evening; however, from one concert to the next, the same compositions are presented and dramatically altered in various ways – for example, through moderation, lighting design, audience participation, or a supplementary immersive level via video installations or acoustic amplification.
In the large-scale research project “Experimental Concert Research”, funded by the Volkswagen Foundation, researchers and musicians are getting to the bottom of the concert experience for the first time. Concertgoers are given insights into this unusual research project and will be able to explore their experience of the concert as test subjects. Using a specially designed combination of methods, they are both wired and interviewed – thereby being actively and passively involved in investigating their concert experience.
For the past four years, a European research team has been developing experimental psychological and sociological measurement instruments that are now being used extensively. Following a “sneak preview” in September 2020 and opening concerts in the Pierre Boulez Saal in mid-April 2022, the almost ten-day concert series, sponsored by the Aventis Foundation, will take place in Radialsystem.

Latvian-born violinist Baiba Skride performs as a soloist with all the leading orchestras in Europe and the USA. She plays the "Yfrah Neaman" Stradivarius, a private loan from the Neaman family.
Bulgarian violinist Gergana Gergova is a distinguished chamber musician and soloist; as concertmaster, she has led, among others, the Festival Strings Lucerne Orchestra. Thanks to a generous loan, she also plays an old Italian violin by G.B. Guadagnini.
Micha Afkham is a member of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to his work with the orchestra, he also performs as a soloist and chamber musician. His chamber music partners include Tabea Zimmermann, Gidon Kremer, and Isabelle Faust. He is a member of the Scharoun Ensemble and the Berlin Piano Quartet.
The Jerusalem-born violist Amihai Grosz has been the principal violist of the Berliner Philharmoniker for the past twelve years. He is also in demand as a soloist and chamber musician, including being a founding member of the Jerusalem String Quartet.
Alban Gerhardt is one of the most internationally successful German cellists and is equally committed to the classical and contemporary repertoire. Last year, for example, he performed the world premiere of a cello concerto by Brett Dean with the Berlin Philharmonic and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.

What defines the concert experience in a concert of classical music today? Using a multi-method research design, this question will be investigated by the research project “Experimental Concert Research” in the setting of actual concerts.
Concertgoers are given insights into this unusual research project and will be able to explore their experience of the concert as test subjects. Registration for participation in the experiment takes place when booking a ticket.
Detailed information on the participation in the experiment can be found in the following PDF “Participation information”.
