Janne Kummer’s workshop format explores the potential of empowerment through collective physical movement. Martial arts serve as a starting point for experimenting with – and transcending – various forms of movement exploration. The workshop introduces participants to the basics of the discipline of Thai boxing / Muay Thai and plays with the performative transgression of its movement patterns through dance. It also addresses the specific use of martial arts as a tool for trauma work. The aim is to generate agency through physical practice and to nurture the spirit and the abilities – in order to fight the battles that matter in the present moment. The workshop especially encourages participation from individuals who feel affected or unsettled by recent political developments and structural violence, and who may be struggling with feelings of helplessness, passivity, or freeze responses.
